Maturity Model
Management System Maturity Levels
AACIS Global evaluates certified organizations against a five-stage maturity model. Each level reflects how deeply an ISO-aligned management system is implemented, measured, and continually improved — from initial adoption through to fully optimized performance.
Level 1
Starter
The organization has begun building its management system. Core processes are documented but adoption is uneven and largely reactive.
- Initial policies, scope, and objectives are defined.
- Awareness of ISO requirements is limited to a small team.
- Records exist but are inconsistent across functions.
- Improvement actions are mostly corrective and incident-driven.
Level 2
Developing
Procedures are being applied across most departments. Roles and responsibilities are clearer and internal audits are taking shape.
- Documented procedures cover key operational areas.
- Internal audits and management reviews occur on a defined cycle.
- Risks and opportunities are identified, though not always quantified.
- Training programs are introduced for relevant staff.
Level 3
Established
The management system is consistently implemented organization-wide and demonstrates conformity with the chosen ISO standard.
- Processes are integrated into day-to-day operations.
- Performance indicators are tracked and reported to leadership.
- Nonconformities are addressed with documented root-cause analysis.
- Stakeholder requirements are systematically considered.
Level 4
Managed
The system is data-driven. Decisions are guided by measurable performance, trend analysis, and a strong culture of accountability.
- KPIs are aligned with strategic objectives and reviewed regularly.
- Preventive actions outweigh corrective actions.
- Supplier and partner conformance is actively monitored.
- Cross-functional improvement projects are routine.
Level 5
Optimized
Continual improvement is embedded in the culture. The organization benchmarks externally and innovates beyond baseline ISO requirements.
- Performance consistently exceeds internal and industry benchmarks.
- Innovation, sustainability, and resilience are core operating values.
- Lessons learned are shared across sites, regions, and partners.
- The management system actively drives strategic differentiation.
How maturity is assessed
During every certification and surveillance audit, AACIS Global auditors evaluate evidence against the maturity model in addition to standard conformity criteria. The assigned level appears on the issued certificate and is updated at each audit cycle, giving stakeholders a clear, comparable view of the organization's progress.
Maturity levels are advisory and do not affect the validity of conformity to the underlying ISO standard. They are designed to recognize organizations that go beyond baseline compliance and to help others identify their next improvement milestone.
